Situated in the heart of the town centre the 12th century grade II* listed church has continuously developed to meet the needs of the community it serves. Our aim was to adapt the church building to continue to serve as community focus, while keeping its character as a profound place of worship.

The project included the careful remodelling of the interior with the insertion of new floors to increase flexibility of use for a variety of activities. Many subtle design features where devised to keep a clarity of the old and new (the continuing story of the church), for example the new floor (incorporating underfloor heating) was separated from the existing stone columns by an illuminated glass margin. Another major aim of the project was to maximise all forms of access to the centre. As part of this the principal south entrance approach was remodelled, reinforcing its relationship to the Market Square and historic Buttercross.

The project has since received the 2014 Pontefract Civic Society Design Award and RICS Award in ‘Conservation’ (2014)
