The original manor house was lost to fire in 1761 and finally demolished in 1950’s. What remains is the magnificent Grade I listed gatehouse that dates back to the early 13th century.

With many levels, stairs and a long thin plan, living in the gatehouse had become inconvenient for our elderly client. We realised the need to provide a fully accessible home that continued to take advantage of the charming gardens and views of the estate. Our solution was a new single storey house tucked behind the existing garden wall. This would be warm and light, with high levels of insulation and a clearstory window capturing the south light from over the wall, and a glazed sun-room the house through the wall and into the garden. The gatehouse was then to continue to be lived in by younger members of the family who still farm the estate.
