The conservation and alteration of the grade I listed Abbey House for the Youth Hostel Association,  a prominent building on the Whitby headland and the Abbey site. The high profile of the project meant the co-ordination of various stakeholders including Strickland Estates, English Heritage, Scarborough Borough Council and the YHA. External funding was secured from the HLF and ERDF Objective 2.

The project involved the modernising the building to meet the high quality of  accommodation required by the YHA. The opportunity was taken to fill in the gaps of existing research by a thorough analysis of the building fabric to inform the design proposals which will be developed to enhance the appreciation of the heritage asset.

The project won the Tourism and Leisure category of the RICS ProYorkshire Awards 2008 and the best refurbishment/restoration scheme in Scarborough Borough Council’s building design awards 2008.
